The Uthukela District Municipality is facilitating the development of a new and unique tourist attraction for KwaZulu-Natal’s well-established Drakensberg tourist route – the Mnweni Valley and Cable Way. The cable way’s base is to be located in the Mnweni Valley, the last undeveloped valley in the northern Drakensberg, and its summit will be between the Drakensberg landmarks of the Amphitheatre and Cathedral Peak. The summit will afford views of KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Lesotho. The location of the Mnweni Valley in respect of the N3 (only 70 km), the busiest transport corridor in South Africa, makes it a very attractive proposition

During the time of King Shaka; there were cannibals living at the Ilenge Mountain area. These cannibals were persistently raiding Zulu communities loyal to the King. With great speed & success, a group of Zulu warriors led by Jobe eradicated the cannibals.

This fascination and general interest in Zulu culture has opened entrepreneurial doors to a growing number of rural communities in KwaZulu-Natal. Whilst retaining the privacy and integrity of their homes, families and social structure, progressive rural communities are encouraging tourists to take a closer look at their culture, customs and crafts.

The proposed Weenen Cultural Theme Park is a venture which will seek to offer tourists to the area the opportunity to visit - and experience first hand – daily life in a Zulu community, both historically and modern day living.

The proposed project is built on and around the Vaalkrans flyover on the N3 near Ladysmith. Initial proposals for the project include : a commercial zone containing a gateway tourism information centre, village for factory shop outlets, service station and allied motoring services, restaurants and fast food outlets at the flyover. In the tourism zone a hotel and conference facilities, the African Art School, a wine farm and winery and a game park is planned.

An opportunity for investors to become involved in a tourism experience strategically positioned on the N3, midway between Durban and Johannesburg.

In 1999 geologist Bradley van Blommenstein discovered fossil deposits whilst in the Injasuthi Valley area of the Drakensberg Mountains. Interest in the findings at the site led to an approach for guidance to world-renowned paleontologist Dr Bruce Rubidge of the Witwatersrand University, who is also head of the Berand Price Institute. Dr Rubidge studied the fossil find and confirmed it was of the Dicynodont period. He also declared that his findings led him to the belief that there were most likely further species of that period to be found in the valley.

It is proposed to create a tourism attraction based on the fossil find, focussing on the premise that the valley is of significant archaeology interest, and taking full advantage of the visitor attractions, facilities and amenities already established in the surrounding areas.

It is proposed to erect a living monument to the Father of the Zulu nation, on prominent site on the Impimbo Mountain, in the central Drakensberg range overlooking the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site. The monument will house a museum dedicated to the history of the Zulu nation - and access to the facility will be by cableway only.

Investment potential includes the establishment and operation of the cableway, and the creation and management of the museum and visitor support services and facilities.
